In high school, students will take STAAR End of Course (EOC) assessments for Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, biology, chemistry, physics, English I, English II, English III, world geography, world history and US history. These tests will help students show that they are achieving to post-secondary readiness standards. The STAAR End of Course (EOC) assessments given in high school are now a graduation requirement. Assessment results will show students, parents, teachers and administrators in which areas they need to most focus, how prepared students are for post-secondary pursuits and the level to which they are achieving.
Students who fail to reach the appropriate standard on a STAAR test are required by the state to be provided with accelerated instruction, which usually occurs during the summer.
After a student fails the STAAR a second time, he will be placed on GPC. The GPC includes the principal, the student’s parents, and the teacher of the subject area that the student failed.
If the student fails a third time, the student is then to be retained in that grade unless the family appeals the GPC and the GPC unanimously determines that if the student is promoted and given additional accelerated instruction.
